Installation Instructions

1. Remove old gasket and thoroughly clean cover plate flange, ring, or shell gasket surfaces. Position Blue-Max® gasket on cover plate. Please make sure the gasket is pushed down tight and flat around shoulder. Note: If shoulder of plate is rounded making the gasket hard  to keep in place, use Blue-Max® Sta-Ons®. (Do not use any grease, sealant, or lubricants.)  This will ensure that one side of the gasket does not slide back up onto the shoulder during installation causing only the inner edge of the ring or shell to catch only the outer edge of the gasket causing premature failure when pressure builds.

2. Install cover plate into opening, set crab/s, tighten nut/s finger tight while making sure the inside diameter of the gasket is centered evenly around the inside edge of the ring or shell.

    * Note: If the cover plate is too small for the opening in the boiler, it’s easy to place the cover off center. An off center plate will cause the same occurrence as previously described in the above note (2).

3. Tighten nut/s with wrench a full turn. When all gaskets are in place as previously described,  torque style #810-T handhole gasket sizes to 90-ft. lbs., and style #800-T manhole gasket sizes to 120-ft. lbs.

       * Note: All plates with double crabs should be alternately tightened ( ie).: 40 / 80 / 120-ft. lbs.

4. Fill and fire boiler. Note: Should gaskets leak while filling boiler do not tighten nut/s. The soft rubber compound under the PTFE cures up with heat allowing the rubber to fill into the pits and irregular sealing surfaces. During this curing process it is not uncommon for leakage to occur.

5. Once the boiler has come up to operating temperature and pressure, allow the boiler to operate for four hours. After this period, retighten any leaking gaskets only enough to stop leakage.

6. Extra care should be taken when installing gaskets on the bottom of a boiler shell. Small particles of scale or sand tend to run down on the mating surface between the time the surface is cleaned and the cover plate is put in place ready to be torqued.

7. Blue-Max® boiler gaskets are sold and intended for use on steam boilers.

Performance data for the Blue-Max® boiler gaskets have been developed from field-testing, customer field reports and or in-house testing. While the utmost care has been used in compiling this information, we can assume no responsibility for errors.
